Coatesville is the home of Lukens Steel Company, the oldest American company in the iron and steel business. Located in Chester County, Coatesville is home to approximately 11,400 residents. Steeped in rich American history, Chester County was created by William Penn in 1682 and is one of the three original counties in Pennsylvania. At the time, 73 municipalities existed in Chester County—one city, Coatesville, 15 boroughs and 57 townships. Coatesville became the one and only city in Chester County in 1915. The County Courthouse was constructed in 1724 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
